That Extra Day Off
The government reserves the right to move a holiday to the following Monday if, by the lunar cycle, the public holidays fall on a Sunday. El Salvador regards Sunday as a rest day for most occupation or businesses. Hence, the following Monday will also be a holiday, making it a long weekend holiday.
Working in Celebration Mode
For employees who could not join in the celebration on holiday dates itself, employers are required to provide a different paid day off in place of the holiday within 30 days. There is also the Day of the Republic which falls on February 18 that is celebrated throughout the country, yet it is considered a national non-pay working holiday. The difference is that everyone is in the mood for a celebration.
